Daily Photos

Let me first express my gratitude to Troy McCarthy at Red Deer Design for maintaining this site in my absence. Troy has graciously agreed to edit and post daily pictures of our trips to Nepal.

The purpose of the daily photo album is to give you a 'real time' window into our busy world while we're away. Having a loved one half way around the world is difficult and a bit nerve racking. Nepal is a remote and extremely poor country. Telephones are sometimes difficult to find and at times unreliable. There are internet cafes but they too suffer the problems of an inadequate, poorly maintained infrastructure. Having been on four previous trips, I can assure you that you are not forgotten. Homesick students talk endlessly about their families, their children, or the love of their lives. Mail call or rather email call becomes an eagerly anticipated event. Being so far from home is difficult and the work tiring physically and mentally. They are all, at times, overwhelmed by the experience. There is so much to see and do in a country so foreign. And on clinic days, after seeing 150 patients in a short 8 hours, something to eat, a shower and a bed is all that is on their minds.

I sincerely hope to have pictures posted every day, but every other day or even every third day is more realistic. Sending images from Nepal can be tedious and somewhat difficult, so please be patient. Stop in from time to time and look for the flashing update picture. If things work out, you might catch a glimpse of someone you know.

To minimize loading times photos will be reduced in size, which may make them a bit fuzzy. Additionally a "preloader" will be used to aid in viewing the images. I recommend you let the preloader finish and then make sure all the photos are loaded before you attempt to view them. All the pictures you see here and many more I simply don't have room for will be made available to the students at their original size and resolution free of charge. If you ask them nicely I'm sure they will be more than happy to share. The 2002 trip yielded more than 2500 photos.

I was amazed at the response in 2002. I thought the daily photo page would be fun and a place for loved ones to check in from time to time. I had wild dreams of 1000 hits on the page.  It quickly became much more. When we returned home the site had almost 2000 hits and I had received several very pleasant emails about the site and how it helped to reassure everyone that we were indeed happy and healthy. I hope you will find it as comforting this year. I will attempt to check my email while in Nepal and, time permitting, write back.

Thanks

Clay
